Biomarkers
The use of biomarkers to identify and characterize disease states is now a well established practice in the medical field, with multiple biomarker tests gaining FDA approval in recent years [i.e. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and HER-2]. Diagnostic testing using biomarkers is of special interest to medical providers, as it can lead to faster, cheaper, more robust, less painful, and perhaps most importantly, more accurate diagnoses. The goal of this research is to establish a human urinary peptidome and use this pool of characterized peptides to both identify and characterize biomarkers for multiple disease states. More specifically, the use of biomarkers for diagnosis of acute kidney rejection and for urothelial carcinoma will be investigated.
