Congratulations

Congratulations to Paul LePlae. Paul LePlae, a third year graduate student in Professor Gellman's group has been awarded a three year fellowship by Kodak. Congratulations Paul!!

********************

Cathy Middlecamp received a grant from DoIT's Department of Learning Technology and Distance Education (LTDE) to develop her course web page for Chemistry 108, which in the spring semester will be taught with a writing component to fulfil the Communications B requirement. Currently, the web page allows students to submit science book reports on the web (which are posted for all to read and peer review) and the grant will allow her to expand this capability to include a wider variety of written assignments. Congratulations Cathy!!

Dr. Veronica Vaida and Dr. Barney Ellison of the University of Colorado invite applications for a Postdoctoral Position in Environmental Chemistry. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation has offered to support a Postdoctoral Fellow at our laboratories here in Boulder for up to two years. A number of collaborative studies are now underway among the groups of Dr. Veronica Vaida and Dr. Barney Ellison at the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Colorado and Drs. Adrian Tuck and Greg Frost at NOAA's Aeronomy Laboratory. For some time now the Dreyfus Foundation has been concerned about the fundamental science belying environmental chemistry and engineering. The high level of concern shown by the public for the solution of environmental problems has not been matched by an investment in the basic science that necessarily underlies any attempt to rationally deal with these problems. Consequently the Foundation wants to attract outstanding basic scientists into the field of environmental chemistry and engineering. We seek a postdoctoral collaborator to undertake a number of joint experimental studies with us. Vaida, Ellison, Tuck, and Frost are a cluster of chemists with a broad range of interests that extend to chemical physics, physical-organic chemistry, airborne experiments & field studies, and atmospheric modeling. We are studying several problems that are of fundamental importance to atmospheric chemistry: a) The properties of Organic free radicals in the atmosphere, b) Atmospheric processing of Organic Aerosols, c) Spectroscopic properties of water complexes in atmospheric radiative transfer, d) Photodissociation dynamics of vibrational overtones, and e) Photodissociation dynamics of molecular complexes in the atmosphere. The award can be renewed for an additional 12 months after the 1st year. Candidates should send a CV, letter of research interests, and the names and addresses of two potential references to: Dr. Veronica Vaida, (303) 492-8605/ (303) 492-5894 FAX, Email: VAIDA@SPOT.COLORADO.EDU .
