Congratulations

Congratulations to Courtney Thompson, a second year graduate student in Mark Ediger's group. Courtney, who won a Chemistry Department Teaching Assistant Award in September for her fine teaching last year, has been recognized by L&S as one of the first recipients of the French-Felten Award for Inspirational Teaching. The award was given this year for the first time to eight TAs in L&S courses, and includes a stipend of $400. Congratulations Courtney!

MINOR AGREEMENT FORMS: The Graduate School requires that the minor program be outlined in an agreement which is approved by the Department no later than halfway through completion of the sequence minor courses. The minor requirement must be completed by the end of the third year of graduate school. Minor agreement forms are available in Room 7315.

I will need your name, address, and the name and address of your faculty escort. Please provide your name/address even if you do not plan to attend the commencement ceremonies. I must have this information by Wednesday, October 21, 1998.

The Chemistry Department and Center for Photochemical Sciences of Bowling Green State University invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level. The Analytical Research Department of Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research, a division of the Warner-Lambert Corporation, is seeking an experienced NMR facility manager to support the Medicinal Chemistry program at Ann Arbor, MI. The duties of the position are to provide direct analytical support to synthetic and medicinal chemists in the field of NMR spectroscopy for small molecule NMR services including:

1. Set-up, operation, and maintenance of automated NMR spectrometers used on an open-access basis by the synthetic chemists.

2. Development of new automated NMR methods.

3. Strategic planning and enhancement of these NMR systems.

4. Consultation with the synthetic chemists on NMR data interpretation, the design and execution of special experiments to address structural assignment problems.

Minimum qualifications include:

1. Ph. D. in Chemistry with 3 years of post-graduate experience in the application of NMR spectroscopy to small molecule structural problems. Alternatively, a BS/MS in Chemistry with more than five years experience in a similar industrial environment.

2. Substantial experience in UNIX systems management.

3. Track record in the operation and maintenance of NMR spectrometers.

4. Substantial experience in the interpretation of NMR spectra.

Candidates are sought to fill a postdoctoral assistant position in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toledo. The successful candidate will participate in research projects involving porous phosphate and phosphonate materials of the group 13 elements. The minimum requirement for the position is a Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science. Demonstrated experience in the synthesis and characterization of porous inorganic or composite inorganic/organic materials, as well as experience in two or more of the following areas is highly recommended: hydrothermal synthesis, powder X-ray diffraction, single crystal X-ray crystallography, thermal gravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis, and surface area and porosity measurements. Dr. Pascale Legault of the University of Georgia has a Postdoctoral position available starting now for heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy studies of ribozymes and RNA-protein interactions. The successful candidate should have some expertise in any of the following: NMR spectroscopy, protein purification, RNA purification, or RNA biochemistry.
