Introductory Research Talks in Physical Chemistry Fall 1998
For entering graduate students interested in physical chemistry, there will be a series of short talks by faculty members describing their research interests. These will be held at 5:45 PM on Thursdays during the first five weeks of the semester. There will be a half-hour talk followed by an informal supper and then two other talks.
Since these talks are brief, students should follow up by contacting individual faculty members in whose research they are interested. Each student should interview at least three faculty members during the fall semester concerning research opportunities.
These talks are a means of finding research opportunities and of obtaining a broad overview of physical chemistry research in the Department. Students expecting to major in physical chemistry should make every effort to attend all of these talks. Teaching Assistants should mark this time on the schedule cards turned into the teaching Laboratory Director.

National Physics Sciences Consortium Graduate Fellowships for Minorities and Women in the Physical Sciences
The National Physics Sciences Consortium Graduate Fellowships for Minorities and Women in the Physical Sciences is offering a unique and exciting six (6) year doctoral fellowship program in Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, and subdisciplines. NPSC welcomes applications from all qualified students with continued emphasis toward the recruitment of minority and female science students in order to offset the historic imbalance faced by these underrepresented groups within the research community. This will provide industry and higher education with the diversity and balance necessary for the future of scientific research in America. The student application is available on the Internet through the NPSC Web page at http://www.npsc.org. Students should access this as soon as possible to meet the November 5, 1998 application deadline. To ensure efficiency of our mailing of recruitment materials, please advise if you no longer utilize or need our materials. In addition, if we do not have your current address and phone number, please write us with your update. Questions about our fellowship program, or request for additional materials should be directed to Gene Bailey, Administrator, at: National Physical Science Consortium, Student Recruitment Office, MSC 3NPS, New Mexico State University, Box 30001, Las Cruces, NM 88003-8001, Phone 1-800-952-4118 or (505)646-6038 Email: npsc@nmsu.edu. Science and Math Grad Students
There is an urgent need for independent learning instructors. The IL program provides correspondence and other distance education courses to students around the world, ranging from high school through lower level graduate courses. The instructor for a student grades papers, answers questions, etc. We most urgently need people who can work with mathematics and elementary statistics students. Pay is by the task, for papers or exams graded, telephone conversations with students, etc. If interested, please contact Mark Berstein, by telephone at 262-2152 or by e-mail at mrbernst@facstaff.wisc.edu.

Professor Guillermo C. Bazan of the University of California - Santa Barbara is writing to request assistance in filling two postdoctoral positions that are available in his group immediately. The first project involves the synthesis and characterization of emissive polymers and small molecules with amorphous morphologies. We place equal emphasis on developing new synthetic methods to access well-defined, conjugated organic materials and on the characterization of photochemical and photophysical processes in polychromophores and conjugated systems. I am especially interested in applicants with an interest in learning new chemistry and a background in either synthesis (of any type) or polymer photophysics. The second project is concerned with the preparation of organometallic complexes containing boron heterocycles. We have found that certain metallocene mimics supported by boratabenzene rings can selectively convert ethylene to 1-alkenes. This is a conceptually new application of electrophilic complexes which we hope to capitalize in a variety of ways. We would like to next be able to control the solid-state properties of the resulting materials by rational control of the reaction conditions. He is particularly interested in students with a strong work ethic, that have synthetic experience and who are willing to venture outside their traditional areas of expertise.Applicants should submit a CV and the names of two or three references and are welcome to contact me by phone, e-mail or regular post for more details. Send all information to: Professor Guillermo C. Bazan, Chemistry Department, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106, Phone: (805) 893-5538.
