"Percent for Art" Project

The "Percent for Art" project that is associated with the Chemistry Building Addition / Renovation Project is now underway. This project represents an important opportunity for the Department to enhance the image that we portray to ourselves, to our students, and to the general public. The State of Wisconsin designates 0.2% of the funding for major construction projects to the "Percent for Art" program. One striking piece recently brought to campus through this program is the glass installation "The Mendota Wall" by Dale Chihuly in the Kohl Center. For the Chemistry project, the program will enable a commission / acquisition of approximately $50,000. The "Percent for Art" selection committee for the Chemistry project recently held its first meeting. The committee consists of 11 members (see below for a list); Fleming Crim and Bob McMahon represent the Department. At the first meeting, the committee identified the following sites for location of artwork: Daniels building - interior (lobby outside Rms. 1351, 1361) Daniels building - exterior (portico) the new main corridor that will connect Daniels, Mathews, and new addition. A brief description of the project, sites, possible themes, and budget, will be included in a prospectus that will be mailed to artists across the country during April. Artists may respond to the information in the prospectus by submitting preliminary sketches, designs, etc. During May or June, the Percent for Art committee will review these submissions and select 2-4 finalists. At this point, the Department will have the opportunity to work with the finalists in developing an advanced design. The committee will then select the artist for the commission / acquisition.

*** If you are aware of artists who should be included on the mailing list for the prospectus, please send names and addresses to Bob McMahon.

*** The Department will continue to provide periodic updates during the course of the selection process. There will be continued opportunity for you to provide input. We welcome your comments and suggestions. (Please direct your comments to Bob McMahon.)
