Department of Chemistry, The University of Queensland, Australia. Chair of Biological Chemistry. Applications are invited for the position of Professor of Chemistry, in the field of biological chemistry, in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Queensland. The Department has strong research programs across a wide spectrum of contemporary chemistry and links with many physical sciences, biological sciences and engineering departments. The current $100 million development of the Institute of Molecular Biosciences and the establishment of a Centre for Marine Studies offer exciting possibilities for research in biological chemistry. Staff have access to excellent instrumental facilities, within the Department and elsewhere in the University, to mechanical, electronic and glassblowing workshops, and to first-class library resources. The appointee to the Chair will be a distinguished chemist with vigorous current research activity based on an outstanding record of scientific achievement in biological chemistry. Applications are encouraged in any facet of this wide-ranging field. The University is interested in exploring possibilities that focus on chemical synthesis, bioorganic chemistry and molecular design of biomimetics, and their interaction with biological targets. A strong commitment to teaching and curriculum design at all levels is essential. The successful applicant will be expected to assume the Headship of the Department for a period of five years in the first instance. Skills in personnel and financial management are essential. The appointee will be responsible for providing academic leadership to the Department, requiring a clear insight into the broader discipline of chemistry and the ability to represent the Department strongly in the Faculty, in the wider University, the profession and the community. A capacity to generate new sources of income, based on the research strengths of the Department, is also an important criterion of selection. The salary for a Professor is $91,821 per annum. The Chemistry Department at Wichita State University seeks applications for a tenure eligible position at the assistant professor level. Chemists with experience in mass spectrometry instrumentation are sought for Fall of 1999 or Spring of 2000. Funds are available for a new mass spectrometer. The individual will teach in the Analytical Chemistry Division at the Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. levels and is expected to obtain external funding for his/her research program. Start-up funding is available for supplies, equipment and support of personnel. A Ph.D. degree with additional training at the postdoctoral level is required. Marquette University, Laboratory Supervisor. (Full-Time, 10-Month Position). Manage and supervise the teaching assistants associated with the organic laboratories (chemistry 023, 024, 123, and 124). Responsible for the organization and quality of the lab instruction. Meet with the teaching assistants on a regular basis to insure quality of instruction, including the pre-lab lectures and actual running of the lab. Present pre-lab lectures to several labs in joint sessions; insure the safe handling of chemicals and disposal of waste; and assist and supervise the grading and exams. Manage the operation and use of the instruments associated with this lab (nmr, infrared, ge's, uv, and mass spec.) and participate in developing new laboratory experiments (computational, instrumental, and "wet"). Requires a master's degree in organic chemistry, doctorate preferred. Must possess prior management and teaching experience. A Scientist to join a multidisciplinary team focused on the discovery of central and peripheral targets involved in obesity, appetite control, wasting disorders, and in the discovery of small molecular weight compounds that can be used to modulate these conditions in humans. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AND/OR JOBS

Assistant Professor Paul Cornillon of Purdue University is currently seeking a PhD student to work in the area of freezing of foods. He/she must have a MS degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering or closely related field with a GPA of 3.25 or higher. The research topic is to improve the shelf-life stability of frozen foods by understanding 1) the quality changes in color and nutrient content, 2) the changes in water mobility and 3) the crystallization mechanism of water into ice. A previous experience working on freezing of foods is a plus. Knowledge of all or some of the following analytical tools is highly desirable: nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, differential scanning calorimetry, ultrasonic methods. Department of Chemistry, University of Michigan. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Enzymology of Free Radical Reactions. An NIH-funded postdoctoral position is available to study how enzymes generate and control reactive free radical species to catalyze chemically difficult reactions. We are using protein engineering, combined with a variety of physical and kinetic techniques to dissect the mechanism of coenzyme B12-dependent glutamate mutase. The unusual isomerization of L-glutamate to L-threo-3-methylaspartate catalyzed by this enzyme serves as a model system with which to investigate the phenomenon of radical-mediated enzyme catalysis. Candidates for this position should have experience in the purification of recombinant proteins from E. colt; steady state enzyme kinetics, and preferably pre-steady state enzyme kinetics. Experience in one or more of the following areas would be also an advantage: sitedirected mutagenesis; synthesis of isotopically-labeled compounds; microcalorimetry; NMR spectroscopy. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, University of Michigan, Department of Chemistry. Parke-Davis, Pharmaceutical Research. The University of Michigan and Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research have created an innovative partnership for postdoctoral training in chemical biology. These prestigious fellowships are funded by Parke-Davis to support collaborative research between Parke-Davis and the University. The appointment is for two years and carries a stipend of up to $ 30,000 p.a. and health care benefits. This newly-initiated project aims to examine how the "fluorous effect" - novel non-covalent interactions that arise when aliphatic or aromatic groups are perfluorinated - may be exploited in drug design. The incorporation of fluorocarbons into a drug may potentially increase its specificity and big-availability The project will initially examine the effect on binding and specificity of incorporating perfluorinated sidechains into inhibitors of matrix metallo-proteinases, a class of proteases that have been implicated in the spread of cancer. Candidates for this position should have experience in organic synthesis; experience in organo-fluorine chemistry or peptide synthesis would be a particular advantage. Experience in the characterization of ligand-receptor binding interactions is also desirable. The project is co-mentored by Dr. Peter Toogood (Parke-Davis) and Dr. Neil Marsh (University of Michigan).
