Grading:

There are 1000 possible points for the course, broken down into four categories with the following designated weightings:

Quizzes                      30%

Laboratory reports     30%

Laboratory results      25%

Technique                  15%

Quizzes: There are 14 quizzes over the course of the term.  The 12 highest quiz grades are used to calculate the final grade (i.e. two drop grades).  The quizzes are given during the discussion sessions.  The purpose of the quizzes is to evaluate your understanding of the underlying theory and principles of each laboratory experiment, and the rational for the specific methods and procedures used in the experiments.  Each quiz counts 25 points.

Laboratory Reports: This portion of the grade is based on the pages from your notebook.  The emphasis is on accurate, timely, and orderly recording of data and observations in the laboratory.  The bulk of your time spent in preparing the laboratory reports should be in the laboratory.  You should not need to spend a lot of time outside the laboratory writing elaborate reports.  Your teaching assistant will collect, review, grade, comment, and then return the reports promptly.  Each lab report will cover defined experiment(s) and have a specified point value.  Grading of lab reports will be based on correct format, complete pre-lab information, and complete (but concise) reporting of procedure, observations, results and discussion.

Laboratory Results and Interpretation: This portion of the grade is based on the quality (and sometimes quantity) of what you actually produce or determine in the laboratory, and on the quality, depth, and thoroughness of your interpretation and discussion of the results.

Technique: This portion of the grade is the evaluation of your overall performance in the laboratory over the course of the semester.  Included in this are observations regarding your: safety, preparation, skills, care, thoughtfulness, insights, and overall improvement.
