Abstract

Most people currently in the chem. workforce once were students in undergraduate chem. courses. Furthermore, the work of many of these people connects to wider global issues and enterprises. As the abstr. for this symposium points out, "existing chem. curricula are not always representative of the current trending toward a transnational practice of chem." How can we transform our courses in order to bring global competencies into the chem. classroom What models now exist How can the concepts of sustainability inform what we teach This talk will address these questions, with an eye to three overarching principles: (1) We live on a finite planet, hence the need to learn to conserve, (2) Our world is interconnected, hence the need to learn what we do in one place affects those elsewhere, and (3) Our world is changing, hence the need to teach questions as well as answers.
