Student Organizations

Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SA-ACS)
The department's ACS student chapter facilitates opportunities for students in the chemical sciences to become better acquainted, to promote the learning and advancement of chemistry, to obtain experience in preparing and presenting technical material before chemical audiences, to instill a professional pride in the chemical sciences, and to foster an awareness of the responsibilities and challenges that face the modern chemist.

Alpha Chi Sigma (ΑΧΣ)
Alpha Chi Sigma (often referred to as "AXE") is a national, co-ed, professional chemistry fraternity, founded at UW-Madison on Dec. 11, 1902. It was founded by nine men, and remained an all-male organization until 1971, when membership was extended to women. The founding fathers laid out three objects to guide the fraternity:

• To bind its members with a tie of true and lasting friendship.
• To strive for the advancement of chemistry both as a science and as a profession.
• To aid its members, by every honorable means, in the attainment of their ambitions as chemists throughout their mortal lives.

Our chapter at UW-Madison has an active membership of about 40 students, both graduate and undergraduate. We also have two houses, at 619 and 621 N. Lake Street, which house nearly half of these members. They serve as great places for members to gather for events like tutoring, chapter dinners, meetings, and social events.

Greater University Tutoring Service (GUTS)
Greater University Tutoring Service, is a volunteer tutoring organization that provides free tutoring to all students attending UW-Madison. Tutoring is available to all students who wish to improve their grades, study habits, and conversational English. GUTS records more than 20,000 student contacts annually, making it one of the largest organizations of its kind at any U.S. college or university.

Student Organization Office
The Student Organization Office (SOO) promotes student involvement as an integral part of a university education, registers student organizations, and provides services, information, education, support, and advising to assist with the development and strengthening of students and student groups. Working with university and community partners, including student group advisors, alumni, and national organizations, and through education on university resources, policies, and procedures, SOO provides leadership development, organizational management, and skill development opportunities in an effort to empower students, to support quality learning experiences outside of the classroom, and to encourage active, thoughtful, involved community citizens.

Writing Center
Since its start as the Writing Laboratory in 1969, the Writing Center at Madison has helped tens of thousands of students, both undergraduate and graduate, learn more about writing. The Writing Center has helped them successfully complete course papers, theses, dissertations, and articles for publication in all sorts of academic disciplines. To provide this help, the center offers an extensive range of individual instruction, non-credit classes, curricular-based writing tutors (Undergraduate Writing Fellows), and instructional materials.
