Living in Madison

UW-Madison campusA medium-size city, Madison is home to more than 230,000 people. In many ways, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the State Capitol are the hubs of activity in downtown Madison. UW-Madison is about a mile west of the capitol, and the two areas are connected by State Street, a pedestrian street lined with shops and restaurants. Located on an isthmus between lakes Mendota and Monona, Madison offers a variety of recreational activities, as well as many arts and cultural events. The isthmus is considered the center of town, and locals typically describe Madison areas in terms of the "east side" and "west side" of town in relation to the capitol.
