IMPORTANT DATES:

December 12th, 1997 is the deadline for receiving a December degree. Everything has to be completed by 4:00 p.m. including depositing your thesis in the Library and you have to have been appropriately registered for the Fall term.

December 21st, 1997 - Commencement ceremony.

January 16th, 1998 - Window period. A grace period for students appropriately registered for the Fall semester, who complete all degree requirements by this date. Your thesis must be deposited in the Memorial Library by 4:30 p.m. on this date. A May degree is awarded, but you are not required to register for the Spring semester or pay a degree completion fee.

MINOR AGREEMENT FORMS: The Graduate School requires that the minor program be outlined in an agreement which is approved by the Department no later than halfway through completion of the sequence minor courses. The minor requirement must be completed by the end of the third year of graduate school. Minor agreement forms are available in Room 1315.

Fort Lewis College has an opening for a tenure-track position in any area of Analytical Chemistry for Fall 1998. The position is expected to be filled at the Assistant Professor level. A Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry is required and postdoctoral experience is desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching at the introductory (General Chemistry) and advanced (Analytical, Instrumental Methods and Special Topics) undergraduate level and developing an externally funded undergraduate research program complementing existing areas. Fort Lewis College is building a multicultural faculty and strongly encourages applications from female and minority candidates. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the college's genes studies program. Marquette University has available a one-semester, part-time, temporary position as an Assistant Professor, Instructor or Lecturer to serve as a sabbatical replacement in Spring 1998. This person would have responsibility to teach an undergraduate level course (CHEM 114): Quantitative Analysis which includes three lectures per week (M-W-F 1:00), several office hours per week, with some additional coordination and support of teaching assistants and instructor of the laboratory portion of the course (taught on Tuesday and Thursday). Successful applicants should have a Ph.D. or Master's Degree in Chemistry, preferably analytical chemistry, or related field. Some teaching experience is preferred. Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for the position of Lecturer/Laboratory Coordinator in the Department of Chemistry to begin Summer or Fall 1998. A Ph.D. in chemistry and prior teaching and supervisory experience are preferred. This is a full-time, 12-month position with responsibilities to include teaching lower-division chemistry courses, oversight and development of undergraduate laboratories, and TA supervision. The applicant is expected to implement innovative lab instructional technologies including the use of multimedia and computers. Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for tenure-track positions in the Department of Chemistry: one in analytical chemistry and one with area of expertise open but with a preference for biomedical research interests. The positions are ranked at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor and begin in Fall 1998. A Ph.D. in chemistry is required, postdoctoral experience preferred. West Chester University of Pennsylvania's ACS certified chemistry department invites applications for two tenure-track positions beginning August 1998. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and undergraduate and graduate instruction. The minimum requirements are Ph. D. or equivalent in Chemistry, demonstrated expertise in the appropriate sub-discipline, potential for development of an active research program, and the ability to teach and communicate effectively. The Department of Chemistry at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor beginning August 1998. Ph.D. in biochemistry or chemistry required with postdoc experience preferred. The successful candidate will participate in a new undergraduate Concentration in Biochemistry. Primary teaching responsibilities in biochemistry (lecture and/or lab), but preferred applicants will have secondary teaching abilities in either analytical (quantitative analysis, instrumental analysis) or physical chemistry. The Department of Chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University solicits applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting August 15, 1998 in any area of experimental polymer physical chemistry. The Department of Chemistry at The University of Toledo invites applications or nominations for two (2) tenure-track and/or tenured faculty positions. Full-time Experimental Applications Specialist position available in the Department of Chemistry's Instrumentation Facility at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with good communication and interpersonal skills as well as a strong background in chemistry and electronics and with 3+ years experience. Dr. Patty Wisian-Neilson of Southern Methodist University has a position for a chemist who recently received a Ph. D. available in February or March, 1998. The project involves the synthesis, characterization, and applications of phosphazene polymers. Properties studied will include thermal stability, gas permeability, electrical conductivity, surface hydrophobicity, and refractive index. The position requires experience in synthetic organometallic, organic, or polymer chemistry and the ability to handle air-sensitive compounds. Polymer characterization experience (erg., GPC, TGA/DSC, DMA, NOR) is desirable. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AND/OR JOBS

United states Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology, wishes to invite applications for postdoctoral research in my laboratory at NIST. The appointments will be granted under the auspices of the National Research Council. Appointments are for a period of two years, salary, plus fringe benefits that include moving expenses, a professional travel allowance, and cost-shared health insurance. At the onset of tenure at NIST, the awardee must be a U.S. citizen and must have held a Ph.D. for less than 5 years. As part of the application, the candidate must submit a short research proposal. Candidates should contact me to discuss projects of mutual interest. This year I wish to particularly encourage projects that take advantage of our recent developments of cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS). Our CRDS website (http://www.nist.gov/cstl/div838/crds_web/) presents some of our advanced and unique facilities. These facilities can support diverse studies of: Chemical Reactions on Thin Films, Gas-liquid Interactions, Heterogeneous Chemistry at Interfaces, Solution-phase Photochemisty, Gas-Phase Radical-radical Reaction Systems, Fundamental Aspects of CRDS Technology. Candidates do not need any prior experience with these chemical systems or techniques-just a desire to do innovative research. The applications must be postmarked by 15 Jan 1998.
