Postdoctoral Fellow, Exxon Research and Engineering Corporate Research Laboratory is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to join their team, which is studying the high temperature gas-phase pyrolysis and oxidation chemistry of model fuels. Their research is primarily geared towards determining the concentrations of key reactive intermediates in flames and pyrolytic reactors in order to understand better the underlying free radical chemistry. The goal of the research is to provide the high quality data necessary to validate detailed chemical mechanisms, as well as to generate insight into the chemical processes that occur in more complex reactor environments. This individual will initially be involved with applying a wide range of experimental techniques to identify the molecular properties that influence molecular weight growth in fuel rich flames. The flame analyses utilize a variety of complementary techniques, including laser diagnostics (L1F and CARS) for temperature and transient species measurements, molecular beam/mass spectrometry for detection of radical and stable species, and GC/MS for the selective identification of larger molecules such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These research efforts are closely coupled to other experiments in our group that utilize laser photoionization/time-of-flight mass spectrometry to study the model fuel reactions at lower temperatures than are present in flames. The ideal candidate for this position would possess a Ph.D. in experimental physical chemistry or a related field. An understanding of chemical kinetics and spectroscopy is desired, as is experience with tunable laser systems and mass spectrometry. Because our work is part of a multidisciplinary team, good interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Although the appointee will work most closely with Dr. John Farrell ( jtfarre@erenj.com , 908-730-2686 ) and Dr. Anthony Dean, opportunities will be available to participate in all aspects of the experimental and theoretical program. Please send your resume and three letters of reference to either of the principal investigators mentioned above at: Corporate Research Laboratory, Exxon Research & Engineering Company, P.O. Box 998, Annandale, NJ 08801-3344, FAX: 908-730-3344.
