CONGRATULATIONS!
The L&S TA Instructional Program Development Committee met recently to select TAs from throughout L&S as Teaching Fellows for 1998. Teaching Fellows present the L&S TA Training workshops in the Fall each year. Two Chemistry TAs, Paul Bonvallet and Faisal Syud, were among the 18 selected. This honor is a testament to the high regard both staff and students have for these fine TAs. Congratulations Paul and Faisal!

Bayer AG, Pharmaceutical Division, Wuppertal, Germany
German/European Organic Chemistry Postdocs in the US, Postdoc Workshop - May 29 - 31, 1998.
The pharmaceutical division of Bayer AG, Germany, would like to invite German/European scientists in the US, who are currently doing postdoctoral research in synthetic organic chemistry, to participate in a workshop from May 29 - 31 in West Haven, CT. The workshop will not only be an excellent occasion to discuss highlights from Bayer's recent research in life sciences, but also to explore specific job opportunities. Over the next two years, Bayer AG will offer several challenging positions in its Medicinal Chemistry Departments in Wuppertal, and intends to recruit organic chemists with a particularly profound synthetic background.
Bayer's pharmaceutical research center in Connecticut will be the host of this workshop. Located close to the Long Island Sound, it provides a stimulating environment for scientific discussions. Participants will have time to make personal contacts with Bayer representatives from the pharmaceutical, agricultural and central research divisions while visiting some of New England's historic sites and experiencing its unique cuisine.
Interested individuals with an excellent background in synthetic organic chemistry should send their resumes to one of the following addresses.
In Germany: Dr. Stephan Schneider, Head of Medicinal Chemistry III, Bayer AG, D-42096 Wuppertal, Phone: 49 (202) 368230, Fax: 49 (202) 364061.
In the United States: Dr. Bernd Riedl, Staff Scientist, Bayer Corp., 400 Morgan Lane, West Haven, CT 06516, Phone: 1 (203) 812-5202, Fax: 1 (203) 812-2650.

28th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in Chemistry
We are pleased to invite you and your students to the 28th Undergraduate Research Symposium in Chemistry. This year the symposium will be hosted by Lawrence University Department of Chemistry, and will convene in Youngchild and Stephenson Halls of Science on Saturday, April 25. We hope this has been a productive year for your students, and that they will be willing to share their results with an audience of faculty and students from other Wisconsin colleges and Universities. A registration fee of $12 per person (which includes lunch on Saturday) will be waived for student presenters, and we plan to continue the recent tradition of offering the principal student author of each paper or poster presentation a one-year subscription to the Journal of Chemical Education (print edition). We also invite students who would like to observe, especially those who are planning research projects for the coming year. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the lobby of Youngchild Hall. Beverages and pastries will be available at that time. Student talks will take place between 8:30 a.m. and noon; poster presentations will occur dung a mid-morning break. A keynote presentation and lunch will follow. Oral presentations should be planned for 15 minutes, with 5 minutes for questions. Slide and overhead projectors will be available, as will push pins for mounting posters. Speakers who might have special needs other than these should indicate those on the abstract form.
Complete information about this announcement, maps of the area, abstract forms and registration forms are available in Room 1380 Chemistry. Please return registration forms, abstract forms, and registration fees by April 13th to: Dr. Jerrold Lokensgard, Department of Chemistry, Lawrence University, Appleton, WI 54912-0599. Symposium information will be posted at: http://www.lawrence.edu/dept/chemistry/urs.html.

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AND/OR JOBS
********************
Two postdoctoral positions are to be filled in the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC. Prospective candidates should perform crossed molecular beams experiments with implications to chemistry in planetary atmospheres and interstellar environments such as molecular clouds and circumstellar envelopes of carbon stars. A list of relevant publications is enclosed. The following research topics are available:
Experiences in crossed molecular beams experiments are not required, but candidates are expected to operate the 35" crossed beams machine within 3 months. Pertinacious, energetic, and hard working candidates should send inquiries to: Dr. Ralf I. Kaiser, Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica, 1, Section 4, Roosevelt Rd., Taipei 106, Taiwan, ROC; Tel: 886-2-23645370; Fax: 886-2-23620200; Email: kaiser@po.iams.sinica.edu.tw.
