POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AND/OR JOBS

********************

The department of Chemistry at Kansas State University invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the research group directed by Professor Kenneth J. Klabunde. A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field is required, and previous experience in Inorganic or Materials Chemistry is needed. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be working in the area of nanocrystal synthesis, characterization, and investigation of surface chemistry. In particular, metal oxide nanocrystals (MgO, CaO, Al2O3, ZnO, etc.) will be prepared in the highest surface areas possible, and crystalline shape determined by electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Surface properties as determined by adsorption of selected gases will be correlated with crystal shapes and defect sites (edges, corners, vacancies). In this way new "destructive absorbents" will be developed that will be of future importance in environmental remediation, including nullification of chemical warfare and biological warfare agents. Send contact: Kenneth J. Klabunde, Kansas State University, 111 Willard Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506, phone (785) 532-6849 fax (785) 532-6666 e-mail KENJK@KSU.EDU . The initial appointment will be for a period of nine months, renewable consistent with funding and satisfactory performance, with a salary commensurate with experience. Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and at least two letters of recommendation by April 1.

The ideal applicant would have extensive experience in a variety of solid state NMR experiments as well as experience with construction and maintenance of NMR equipment. Experience and interest in organic synthesis of labeled compounds would also be very helpful, as would experience with X-ray crystallography and preparation of scientific papers. The successful applicants will be exposed to a wide variety of techniques in the area of solid state chemistry. Duration of the position would be for at least one year, and preferably for two years. Salary will be commensurate with experience and background. Send c.v. and the names of three references to: Prof. Mark D. Hollingsworth, Chemistry Dept., 111 Willard Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506; ph.: 785-532-2727, fax: 785-532-6666, e-mail: mdholl@ksu.edu .
