This Symposium was held in honor of Professor Gilbert Stork on the occasion of his receiving an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Professor Gilbert Stork is Professor Emeritus at Columbia University. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry in Madison in 1945, under Professor S. M. McElvain, and he went on to one of the most illustrious careers in organic chemistry in this century. Stork's accomplishments as a researcher and educator have had a major impact on the development of organic synthesis. He was a pioneer in the development of new reactions, and the understanding stereochemical control needed for the construction of complex molecular frameworks. Stork's accomplishments in this arena helped to make natural product synthesis one of the central focuses of organic chemistry. He has applied his skills to many classes of molecules, and the many techniques stemming from his work have proven to be broadly applicable.

Stork's achievements have earned him a wide array of honors. He was elected to the National Academy of Science at the age of 39. He has earned all of the major awards in chemistry, except the Nobel Prize. Over 160 of Stork's former co-workers have gone on to academic careers in the U.S., Europe and Japan. Stork is revered as a warm and supportive mentor among these scholarly progeny.
